So did we 1998, after they did nothing substantial in 16 years. The SPD can't do it either, as clearly visible.
You should have voted in the CDU back in 2002. 4 years was enough to figure out that the SPD/Green coalition wasn't going to hack it. Switch sides every 4 years until they get it right. No Hitler required.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

May be that would work. But you won't get that in the head of Joe Sixpack, and his vote counts just as much as the vote of a graduated economist. As long as we don't get some real leader (not necessarily a new Hitler... a Thatcher would probably be enough ), Germany is doomed.

Trust the electoral judgment of Joe Sixpack. It is no worse than most highly educated people.

Yes, a Thatcher would do nicely.

Look how I got you from berating the German voter to praising him?

No, I am praising Joe Sixpack, but berating the voters.

DanS - all of your criticism of the German voter applies to US voters... in spades.

BTW Dan, regarding Germany. IIRC unemployment according to (comparable) ILO standards is about 7% in western Germany (give or take a couple of tenths) while it's twice as much in eastern Germany. So I wonder how tight labour laws really are. They don't seem to be so for a developed region, yet they do for a developing one. You may be overlooking the issue of reunification a bit too much.

IIRC unemployment according to ILO standards in the EU is 8.8%. I'd look it up at http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/ , but I can't access the site. (normally speaking you can check rates for individual countries as well in there)

Good question. Allow me to think about it.
