The vast vast majority of those who return are not even Jews.

      • Yeah, like most of Russian Jews were ever religious
Speaks volumes about your Mid-Eastern paradise and the craptitude of post-Soviet countries, though

With all my due respect to your academic inclanations, David - discussions on who would win in a hypothetical US-SU conflict in 1945 are akin to internet discussions on whose penis is bigger. We would never know. Don't know about you, but personally I think it's a good thing that we didn't have a chance to find out.

Besides, the leadership of both countries by the end of the war was not made of idiots and we know from a historical record that a conflict between US and USSR in 1945 did not happen, Patton & co nonwithstanding. From this one may conclude that neither side considered itself strong enough to take on the opposing one.

Religion has no role here, I'm talking about ethnicity.
In the last years the majority of immigrants from Russia to Israel were ethnically Russians, not Jews. They are the ones who come back.

                    • On a related note, I recently had a debate with a friend of mine, who said that the US could have won an OFFENSIVE war against the Soviet Union in 1945. As Serb and ErikM will be glad to know, I disagreed. He sent me an email about it, so I threw together a 16 page paper and emailed it back

Sure it's possible we could have won an offensive war against the USSR in 1945. It's also possible Thor might appear and declare Christianity a false religion. Possible, but not likely.

The Most the US would have been able to do (political will is important here) is eject the Russsians from East Germany...and that in itself would have been a doozy of a task. We didn't have Pershing Tanks in the numbers needed to offset Russian T-34s. Even I'll say T-34 > Sherman tank.
