Strategic thinking was not one of his strengths but if they managed to pull off Sea Lion and invade England in strength I think they could have succeeded. The whole war would have gone differently if not for the bravery of the RAF in the Battle for Britain. Churchill was not kidding when he said "This was their finest hour."

The USSR disagreed with the UN on how things were being run in the UN (thats another story...) so they walked out. Shortly after they walked out the Communist North invaded the free South. Since the USSR walked out and China's vote was then held by Taiwan nobody was there in the Security Council to veto UN intervention in Korea. The USSR, in their anger, missed an opportunity to unify Korea on their terms.

Not too many countries have formally declared war in modern times. I believe the last time our Congress formally did so was in 1941. However, the Geneva Convention is still binding on those engaged in warfare, declared or not.

AFAIK, there were referendums in Baltic states about joining the USSR. USSR may have defeated Hitler and won WW2, but it is also responsible for Hitler's rise to power by forbidding the German Communists from compromising to deal with the threat and by being a bogeyman Hitler could dangle at will.

Regarding the topic, any country is better with a democracy than with a totalitarian dictatorship.

This is extremely hypothetical; Hitler may have come to power even if Comintern took a bit more liberal policy on creating an alliance between communists and other leftists in Germany.

In any case, USSR is no more responsible for Hitler's rise to power than Allies imposing humiliating peace terms on Germany in the Treaty of Versailles. Or Chamberlain's appeasement policy towards Hitler. Or Hitler's parents. Or a thousand of other things.
