Meanwhile most of Canada probably felt pretty smug seeing the cocky Leafs and they're annoying fans crash and burn.

What's there to be envious of? Your high crime rate, your pollution, your overly-dense population, or your arrogance?
At least class cities like Calgary are better educated, cleaner, safer, and true hockey fans with higher incomes and lower taxes and costs of living. Compare any home Calgary playoff game to home Toronto playoff games, there's no contest when it comes to fan support.

How can it be the centre of the hockey universe if it's utterly inept in the post-season?

High crime rates??? Nothing compared to American cities.
Densely populated??? Travel to Asia and you'll see that ain't true.
Pollution? Sure, but that's part of being a real city. Calgary doesn't have much pollution, but hardly anyone lives there and nothing much happens so what do you expect.

The cost of living is low in Flin Flon too.
Name a great city and the cost of living there will be high because people want to live there. No one really wants to live in Calgary.
And Calgarians are not intelligent. We know this because they always vote conservative.

Of course, during the regular season, there are always empty seats in the Saddledome, unlike Toronto where every game is sold out. But that's because Calgarians are hockey smart and they know that a Flames regular season game ain't worth seeing.
During the playoffs, Air Canada Centre gets a boring crowd, but that's because so many people are willing to pay big bucks to see the Leafs that all you get are rich arseholes. It's the price we pay when we have the most popular team in the NHL.
Sorry guys, but the Canadiens are the most popular NHL team, not the Leafs. We've got the ticket sales record and the largest TV audience as a % of population.
Re Toronto vs. Calgary: sadly, all studies consistently demonstrate that Montreal is the best city in Canada for quality of life. And it's also much cheaper than other Canadian cities, so price is not always the best determining factor.
