  • Giancarlo...Do you live in Spain or L.A.?
So it seems that Spain is your country as much as it's mine. But until we both live there, please keep sending your contribution to humanity by voting Republican.

Not quite, doofus. It's in fact illogical to accuse someone without any proof.

L.A. I hate it here. But truly I am and always will be Spanish.

It is both of our country. We just have differing opinions. That's legal in Spain now.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

I don't think Giancarlo votes Republican. Too left-wing for him. Last time we heard, he was supporting Franco.

As much as Fez may deserve it, let's try to keep the flaming in this thread to a minimum.

                    • Question: did the Basque people agree with the ETA before they had their autonomy, and dropped support after Madrid offered some concessions?

No it wasn't. Each terrorist organization has an MO. My gut instincts about what group is behind a particular attack is very rarely wrong. This attack has the claw marks of AQ all over it. When I woke up this morning to the news, despite the radio saying it was ETA, I was pretty sure it was AQ.

Euskadi support for the ETA was once very high, but it has been dropping since the 80s. The ETA was once a left-wing organization, but it has become more and more nationalist and less and less Marxist over time.

During the 1980, Spanish deaths squads targeted suspected ETA members, and the ETA went a little nuts, targetting more civilians and losing people's support.

These days they're little more than a criminal cult.

                          • Terrorism is a sad thing, but sometimes people are just looking for it. National autonomous movements are valid causes IMO, and those who don't want to recognize them are exposing themselves to risks.

This said, it seems like 'negociating' with terrorists can be successful, as demonstrated by the massive opposition to the terror act in Basque territory.

EDIT: I mean that granting them autonomy has turned them into a mostly peaceful people.

                            • These facts speak for an ETA involvement and against Al Qaeda:

                              1. Spanish authorities have been cracking down hard on them, possibly infuriating extreme fringe groups.

                              2. Spanish authorities received intelligence of massive ETA attacks against trains in Dec. last year.

                              3. Spanish authorities intercepted an ETA van laden with 1000 lbs of explosives on Feb 29.

                              4. No suicide attacks this time.

                              5. That Al-Masri and or whoever claimed the responsibility is not for real. That guy or group has claimed the responsility for the power outage last year and denied the responsibility for car-bombing Shias in Karbela this year. We know these were not the case.

                              6. Lots of maniacs these days are quick to divert attention to Al Qaeda. Remember the Anthrax mailer? That guy was clearly an American who wanted the Patriot Act to pass.

These facts speak against ETA and for Al Qaeda:
                              1. Well coordinated attacks that went beyond the ability of ETA.

                              2. There was a warning by Zawahiri a few weeks ago.

                              3. The attack differed greatly from ETA trademark.

                              4. Van found with detonators and Arabic Koran tape.

My take on that: 60% ETA and 40% Al-Qaeda.

If the explosives used in the attacks matched the ones seized on Feb 29, then I would say 75% ETA and 25% Al Qaeda.
