I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

    • I second or third or whatever the notion that there are many many good debaters here on Apolyton. I would judge a good debater as one who actually listens to the arguments of the other and provides a cogent rejoinder or a concession where appropriate. People who never concede a point or that simply leave a thread if they are defeated in an argument lose my respect. Che would have made the top of my list but for the fact that he never, ever agrees with his opponent on even the smallest point. Ditto, Imran.

I apologize if I omit somebody in the following list that I really respect, but my list must include

      Spiffor
      Whaleboy
      Sikander

      Honorable mention:

      Michael the Great
      Molly
      Ming
      Siro
      Ben

      • Has Ming or MtG ever conceded a point from the other side?

Why? Because this award actually has some meaning?

For some reason you reminded me of Sir Humphrey Appleby and false modesty.

                  • False modesty is the best kind!

                    Btw, who's Appleby?

I don't dispute that. It's just that he has a problem with relating it to the real world. His "evidence" doesn't come close to supporting the conclusions he draws from it. The itunes thread is a(nother) blatant example. I challenge anyone to support his ridiculous viewpoint - it's at odds with the facts.

In summary it's very easy to beat up on him effectively without having any specialist technical knowledge. Drake is also quite good at this, when he can be bothered.

                      • Appleby was the machiavellian Permanent Secretary in a comedy series from the early 80s called "Yes, (Prime) Minister". He was played by Nigel Hawthorne.

Great series if you ever get a chance to see it.

Dude, you were completely and totally owned. Get over it.

Everyone sees it but you and your cronies.

I thought I made that clear in the thread?

He has an understanding of what the common user wants and needs more than anybody around here. Everyone else has this, "I use platform so and so, so my method must be the best and everyone else sucks," type of mentality.

                                Thanks .

Heard of the show, never saw it though. Hopefully BBC America plays some repeats of it one day .
