In which case "to be" can be considered both transitive and intransitive, and may or may not require an object as communicative necessities dictate.
I'll say again, what you are adding is not an object, but a subject complement to fill in the blank. I am {blank}.
A subject complement, be it a noun or adjective, follows a linking verb and modifies or refers to the subject. No objects are involved in the sentence.

Asher wouldn't be a bad debater if he didn't let his loyalties blind his judgement so dramatically. He does posess a respectable level of knowledge regarding Technology. But he is just so devoted to proving every last aspect of anything Microsoft (or Intel) does to be right, and every last thing that Apple or Linux does to be wrong, that it is hard to take him seriously. This causes him to take often very illogical positions in a debate.
In fact, it has gotten so bad that I have learned to view the truth as the opposite of whatever Asher says regarding most computer matters. It's a shame really, because I suspect that he would have a lot of good things to say if he just learned to see things more clearly and not view every debate as a chance to try to prove his preconceived notions.

Anyway, hey loin..you very very good in that heated debate we had about natural rights and the nature of murder- but since I haven't seen you get into any serious debates in a long time...

Wouldn't it be a good idea to have an update in the first post on the nominations so far? The "update" that is currently there is from a couple of hours after the thread was started and it's kind of misleading. For instance, Sikander has been nominated at least 4 times, not just once, he must be in the top running now.

Yeah, I've been busy with my thesis. I've got enough time to be a dickweed, but not enough time to debate. And, since Poly frowns upon the former activity (at least in the case of irreverently inane dickweeds, which is the only kind I know how to be), I've had to find supplemental forums on which to get myself warned/banned.

Speaking of which, I haven't seen Lincoln post very much in awhile, either. Once in a blue moon, if that often.

So, in the phrase, "you make me happy," is "happy" the direct object, and "me" the indirect object? If not, why? It is my impression that adjectives and nouns ALWAYS perform different functions. If it's an adjective, it can be taken as implied that you are saying, "You make me a happy person," and not identifying your sudden transformation into an abstract descriptive concept. Much as "come here" implies "you come here," rather than inviting the assumption that you're grunting sentence fragments for fun.
At least over here it's that way. I don't know about non-American grammar. Before I came to this board I had never even heard of "subject complements."
