Come to think of it, the last version didn't crash on me. Maybe I have to reinstall Acrobat Reader for some reason.

      • Well, I've been using both Opera 7.23 and Firefox 0.8 and both are very good browsers.

Good things about Opera = Small, full of features (and you don't need to install extensions), the Wand feature, better implementation of tabbed browsing and mouse gestures, M2 email client (it's wonderful, even if it needs to improve).

Bad things about Opera = It's slower than Firefox

Good things about Firefox = Fast. Fast. Fast. Did I say it is fast? It feels less bloated than Opera, more flexibility wrt popup blocking, and I like Gecko rendering engine (though this is totally subjective, of course).

Bad things about Firefox = the vanilla package is too slim, you have to install extensions in order to add features (and sometimes these extensions conflict with each other or with the browser code), and it is less polished than Opera (although this is to be expected, after all it is still a beta software). But, boy, how it is fast!

All in all, I think that Opera still wins over Firefox over a small margin... But this is just my opinion, and some things I mentioned above are entirely subjective, so...
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

        • Hmmm I'd say that Firefox is better by a reasonable margin than Opera, and Opera by a big margin over IE. Bare in mind that 0.8 is just a preview release so the 1.0 release is going to be amazing!

I like the original mozilla idea of having an integrated html editor etc with it, a firefox implimentation would be cool, or maybe they'll just swap the old mozilla browser with firefox .

          • The current idea is to still allow integration between all of the "new" lightweight components (Firefox instead of Mozilla Navigator, Thunderbird instead of Mozilla Mail, Calendar, etc) via extensions. I'm not sure about how the HTML editor works though.

Firefox 0.9 is expected to more tightly integrated with Thunderbird if you install that extension, with mail buttons and whatnot.

                Indeed!

The speed is the one reason I loved Firebird and Firefox is even FASTER! Incredible!

                • You should see what it's like on a custom build.

By default, it's for i386, so it doesn't use MMX or anything like that.

You can get Firefox builds with special optimizations and use of MMX, SSE, and SSE2 extensions and it's even faster, provided you have a CPU that supports them.

                  • Also, for those that don't know, virtually every night a new build of Firefox is put online. I've been using 0.8 for months now really, before it was official. Of course, the interim builds are somewhat buggier, but when you find a bug and report it you can actually watch it get updated. Developers will post patches and it may be fixed a couple days later.

There's a website called The Burning Edge which posts the changes (bugfixes/new features) each day, as well as known bugs: http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/

                    • Just downloaded this...

                      I. Am. In. Love.

I think Opera may be headed to the scrap heap once I get all the extensions I want loaded and figure out a way to transfer all my passwords...

I may never use IE at home again.

Opera 7.5 which I just got last night.

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
