I'm having to laugh at some of the comments in this thread.

"I never done it" seems to be a popular if misconceived attitude. Well if I buy a company and that company is discovered to have committed some past wrong for which it must pay compensation, I am on the hook for it because the company is. Same goes for the state.

Possibly, but there are things called 'statutes of limitations'. Plus, unlike your analogy where there is legal 'wrong', slavery was legal and there's no basis for suit.

How about my idea for reparations: Since their ancestors were kidnapped out of Africa, anyone now who wants reparations will get first class airfare, one way, to their destination of choice within Africa, with their personal belongings shipped to them. Status quo ante and all that.

To the extent you have live people or immediate descendants who can show a direct economic effect of those laws, you'd have a potential case. However, you also have a nice can of worms in that you'd have to net out the "benefits" of various government programs (legislative mechanisms just like Jim Crow) that were later enacted with the intent of overcoming the legacy of economic damage inflcted as a result of Jim Crow.

really honkey comes from hunky or hungarian. blacks must have heard anglo-americans referring to hungarians as hunkies and used it for all whites.

Except for one detail - you can't paint the whole thing in broad brush ideological strokes, you have to make an evaluation of the direct economic effect on each individual, just as you do with Jim Crow.

Honky/Hunky/Hunyak/Honyock
Honky, an African American slang term for a white person, dates to at least 1946. The origin is not quite certain, but it is most likely a dialectical variation on the older term hunky or hunk. This latter terms date to 1909 and 1896 respectively and are probably from Hungarian. Unlike honky, the latter terms are usually used to denote people of Slavic or Central European ancestry and are not primarily used by African Americans.

Also related are hunyak or honyock, which date to c.1907 and are probably compounds of Hun[garian] + [Pol]ack.

All the terms are used contemptuously.

Note that they do say the word origin is unclear. When I've asked Blacks folks about it, its because we sound funny.
