GePaP, while I agree the horrors of war should be represented in the memorials, and in the case of Vietnam there was more horror than anything else, but there are other aspects of war.
How about the heroism of the fighters, both dead and alive? How about the triumph of a cause all those people thought important enought to die for? Granted the WTC is not a war memorial, that gives far too much credit to the attackers. However, the firefighters and private citizens who risked and gave their life that day deserves commending in grand style. I think the currently building WWII memorial and the Korean War memorial captures all facets very nicely and tastefully.
I personally believe we should just put a stop gup untill the war on terrorism is won (which I know will be a LONG time) so we can have a memorial and triumph monument, to show the lives lost there, in fact the lives that let to the very war, were not loast in vain.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
You all know the world trade center was in no way a hub of world trade. Those are the most misleading names.

"World Trade Center" doesn't imply it's a hub of world trade, merely that trading goes on there on an international scale, which certainly was true. Most major cities have a world trade center.
Or maybe we shouldn't call a mall a shopping center, since it's not the center of all shopping!
And I personally think huge, grand memorials to the dead are garish, having nothing to do with taste.

Of course we should not name them after the ideals that our country aspires to. We should name them after the ideals of our economic system...wait we are talking New York...okay...

Good thing you won't have any memorials built to you, but those of us in professions that do, we know our fallen like them just fine.

If this is directed at me, I'd love to know what presumptions you're under about who I am and what I do. Do tell.
I'm not anti-memorial, I'm anti-big, garish, overdone memorial full of meaningless traditional claptrap like bronze statues and obelisks.
Frankly, I don't think people who cast aspersions as to the intent of those working on this memorial (i.e. "they only want it that way 'cause they're cheap!") deserve anything other than contempt. Talk about defiling the spirit into which this is being entered...

Their names wil be engraved in stone- that is as much remembrence as anyone gets, unless you were to ask for statues of each guy. I don;t buy the notion of unnaturla heroism on that day- in times of crises like that (a sharp, immidiate crisis) people alwasy come through. The overwlhlming reality of 9/11 is one of tragdy and loss. Yes, there was heroism, but only in the context of catastrophe. A memorial to 9/11 should be akin to the Arizona Memorial, and the Arizona Memorial is an abstract shape and a plaque of names, not some statue or other paraphanelia.
The WW2 memorial strikes me as Roman lite- triumphal arches, eagles..tacky.

Your view on memorials is a minority considering the designs submitted to those in charge of the WTC memorial design. There used to be a site up with hundreds of them.
The Arizona memorial is considered to be one of the ugliest ones in existance. There have been more than a few initiatives to replace it, included the Navy. The Navy wanted it gone because it is falling apart. That of course is the problem with most contemporary designs, they are contemporary and do not become distiguished with age. Sheet metel, no matter how much you care for it, does not last the test of time. The only exception to this is the Eifel Tower, but the French overwhelmingly wanted it torn down after the World Fair (I think that was the event they made it for) was over. More than a few people still think it is gaudy.
Interesting that a Washington monument is Roman like, as that is what all of Washington was originally designed to look like.

And Washington is a boring, ugly city from an architectural standpoint. It looks like a giant cemetary full of colorless mausoleums. It's also wrong, since the Romans used a lot of color in their buildings. The friezes on the buildings were fully painted.
Once again, you are grossly in the minority on this one. Not that that makes you wrong, you are entitled to your opinion.
