How are agricultural tariffs part of gloablization? Globalization is the opening of markets to increased trade & commerce; tariffs would hinder that. Tariffs & subsidies are a hinderence to free trade.

they're not, not really. but you get protests against them at many a wto conference.

I think any European who really cares about cleanly run corporations should insist that Europe adopt the new US standard that CEO's personally vouch for the accuracy of their financial statements so that they are personally liable if they are inaccurate.

I for one am going to re-examine my holdings and pull everything I have that buys Europeans stocks.

The utter hypocrisy on the right is fascinating. We bash the French because they were supposedly "supporting" saddam hussein... yet MNC's support most notably stalinist China.

Ned aren't you one of the most ardent anti-commie posters here? Yet you are supporting communist china when you talk about supporting globalization.

utter ****ing hypocrisy... it never ends...

When did I ever bash the French for 'supporting' Saddam? I don't care.

Don't paint the right with one big brush, Sava.

why not? everyone paints everyone with a big brush... I'm not going to waste my time and sort out every single person's individual views on the matter. If my "stereotype" doesn't apply to you, then ignore it.

plus Imran, as I've said before, you aren't included in my stereotypes about the right because you are

              A. not a hypocrit
              2. have integrity

No doubt I am an ardent anti-Communist, but when Chinese communism abandons socialism, I become less ardent as they are actually doing something for the people of China economically. This is almost like Marie "let them eat cade" Antoinette finally doing something positive for the French people. It gives one hope, especially since the ChiComs are even talking about "democracy."

Also, I see no inconsistency between supporting both globalization and China's "third way". What did you have in mind, Sava?

I don't know... perhaps not supporting a repressive Stalinist government? just a thought...

oh yeah, I agree with Howard Dean... call me whatever you want, but I don't think we should do business with oppressive regimes, dictatorships, or corrupt third world governments that abuse their own people. Wasn't that the reason we went after Saddam? or one of them?

If that means I got a pay a few more bucks for ****, fine... at least I'll sleep better knowing some tinpot ****ing dictator or some evil group of terror supporting mullahs aren't getting jack**** from me.

but hey, go back to watching your Fox News and shopping at WalMart... go support China as they execute a few more hundred or thousand pro-democracy and/or free-speech advocates...

maybe one day you will wake the **** up...

http://www.nationmaster.com is indeed a great site, too bad they don't have ALL the data, really.

An interesting side question of it all is what will happen when all the countries will industrialize? who will supply cheap goods?

No, seriously... some countries will supply the 'cheap goods' because of comparative advantage. At that point in time, probably, most that work will probably be completely automated... what with technology advancing as it is.

If they'll be able to make machines that can make toys, they'll be able to make machines that pick fruit, assemble everything, etc. And more and more services jobs will get automated, etc. etc. etc.

                              What then?

It is not fair for Porsche to say :

Porsche, the German maker of sports cars, shelved its plans to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange last year, rather than going along with the American regulation.
Porsche made this decision before Enron, for the following reasons :

                                - They think that the obligation to issue quarterly results has no meaning in the lux car industry.

                                - They are upset, as many others, by the stupid use made by the financial analysis corporation of the quarterly results, and the consequences of such on the stock exchange.

From many other companies this could be qualified of bad excuses, but the historical financial record of Porsche supports convincingly this position.
                                Statistical anomaly.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
