Comparing slavery to say, the Holocaust, is a bit complicated. Events that resulted in a huge loss of life in a very short time frame need to be viewed differently than pervasive practices over lengthy time periods. Slavery and all it entails probably deserves to be at the top of every list, but the mass slaughter of millions over, say, a decade, deserve special consideration since the slaughter was perpetrated by a relative few as compared to a practice like slavery engaged in by many peoples all over the world.

Of course NOT! What happens afterwards does not affect how bad each act actually was.

Both murders are equally horrid. The punishments have no impact on the gruesomeness of the murder.

              Poor unenlightened apolytoners.

There is no such thing as right and wrong, and levels of wrong. There is only the degree to which something sucks.

AS, No resonably sane person would support Pinochet, he was a bloody butcher. Alledele (sp?) was elected DEMOCRATICALY (OK, so was Hitler, but he used violence and intimidation to win, Alledele didn't).

i agree with paiktis on that,if i would have to choose between being a jew or an armenian i would say jew.At least the crime commited against them is recognized and i believe that no one will let it happen again,in contrast with other crimes that will propably go unpunished

besides, even if not one of either one of them remained to feel bad for his murderer not being punished, thre's also the moral question. a crime rightfully punished is less "baaad" than an unpunished crime when it comes to morality as a general concept.

Yes, the wrongs of slavery were worse than the Holocaust. Especially seeing how it lasted for centuries and killed far more than the Holocaust.
But the Confederacy did not last for centuries, nor is it responsible for the deaths of millions, or I suspect any significant number of slaves.

Which are distinct from how bad the murders were... DUH!

a crime rightfully punished is less "baaad" than an unpunished crime when it comes to morality as a general concept.

No it isn't?! What sort of wierd morality do you suscribe to?! A murder that is punished is just as bad as a murder that isn't punished. Both involve taking the life of a person... therefore both murders are equally bad.

The reprisal by the state may be less bad, but the murders itself are equally bad... as a general concept of morality.
