I agree completely.

Differences of political opinion aren't just about people seeing things differently. People see things differently because of their economic interests. That determines what their opinion will be. Moderates ignore this completely and the end result is not a real change in the status quo, but a different type of continuation of the status quo. That is, that the status quo is maintained in a more moderate form.

How do conservatives reconcile claiming to be individualistic with their support of religion, family, patriotism and the military?
They don't, they're only individualistic when it suits them and that's only when they like a particular freedom, no different than the liberals. But where it counts, liberals and conservatives are the same - they get in power and begin stealing the freedom and money of other people. That's why liberals and conservatives spend so much of their time debating social issues, those don't involve much money.
If both groups are going to get in power to steal money from others (and they do), what else is there to create separation between them other than which freedoms should be sacrificed in the name of creating the "us and them" situation... The "funny" part is that both sides will use these social issues to portray themselves as "moral" and the other side as immoral the whole time they are using government to commit robbery on a massive scale...
Being a moderate imo is about taking a dialectic of different approaches and applying the synthesis. Such is not my field of interest, but as ideals cannot be transplanted into the real world without a spasm of failure. As it is a synthetic compromise, it cannot really be defended, only a product of the respective defences of more logical views. However, like I said, moderate solutions tend to be better in reality than those which are purely conceptual, of course, it is the latter that provides the engine for change, I see that in a more artistic/philosophical sense than applicable. It's like a face painter being inspired by the Sistine chapel.

Talking about being a Moderate in terms of ideology as something good in and of itself it completely ridiculous. None of our ideologies would be even remotely moderate 1,000 (or, hell, even 100 years ago). Would it make sense for people in those situations to have views that cleaved to the middle path (ie, maybe we should just beat heretics up instead of killing them!) in all those past times, and if not why does it make sense now?
What makes the most sense never changes, just how it should be implemented in any given situation (would be a bit silly to call for immediate universal sufferage 1,000 years ago), but it makes no sense to attempt to calibrate your beliefs to constantly-changing prevailing ideology.
Your inferior far-right wing ideology is oppressing me, and I will not stand idly by!
