      The Japanese site of Rokkasho-mura has the advantages of proximity to a port, a ground of solid bedrock and a nearby US military base.

      [silly question mode]
      Why is a nearby US base an advantage to an international co-operative research program?

                There is,

                but it went the way most OT threads do and sort of moved on to something else entirely.

                      Is it bias or sheere incompetence ? What was the propaganda effectivness of affirming last Thursday that Russia and China were anticipated to support the Japanese location? And what is the interest for the UK, who is part of the EU on this project, to support Japan.

                      More interesting is the recent history of the membership of the ITER project :
                      - end of 1999, the US left the project;
                      - january 2003 China joined the project;
                      - february 2003 the US came back;
                      - june 2003 South Korea joined the project.

                      A suspicious mind could wonder if and how those events are correlated, and for what end.
