They'd be too busy selling them.

Wow, stop behaving like chicken****, people.

"will I survive a terror attack?" Of course you will. Terrorists will use bombs. even very powerful ones, but why do you think you'll be hurt? They managed to kill a couple of thousands, and you were COMPLETELY unprepared. now you do have lots of things going on, defence-wise. this will not only lower the possibility of a terror act happening, but will also lessen it's strength.

        chill, people.

Somehow they get a lot more frightened of being blown to bits by a terrorist than of being flattened by a semi.

          Unless it's a terrorist semi...

It's similar here. We get much more killed in car accidents, some of them much cheaper to prevent than all of this security, yet we do little to nothing about it.

THe alert level raise is based on "chatter in the network" of the kind that were the authorities to ignore it and something were to happen, theyd be in deep yogurt.

Theres a certain possibility there will be no attack, the chatter relating to the US will prove to be a diversion from actual attempts in the muslim world, or any attempted attack will be broken up.

Theres a possibility there will be an attack, but it will prove to be small scale.

Theres a possibilility of a large attack. There are rumors that AQ is talking about an airborne attack again - given the defences I dont think they mean a hijacking, but possibly a private plane spraying chemicals or radioactive material. The odds of this are low, but the consequences fairly serious.

But of course the best approach (for those not professionally involved with security and emergency management) is to live our lives, with a slightly elevated degree of vigilance, and to maintain the preparations that are desirable for natural disasters anyway.

I disagree the consequences being very serious. dirty bombs aren't that effective at causing harm to human beings.

It's only effective at scaring the population.

Oh i agree the whole dirty bomb - nuke comparison is overblown, but the panic factor and economic losses would be considerable. Look at how people reacted to Three Mile Island.

and I don't feel it is even necessary to elevate your level of vigilance, whatever that means.

Just go about your life as usual. Unless you actually spot someone about to perform a terract, there is nothing you can do. Go about your business.

Sure you should know escape routes from buildings and such. But you should know those anyways, because fire is more likely than a terract.

exactly how did they react to 3 mile island? I was very young at the time, and did not watch the news. I don't remember any kind of hysteria- of course I don't live near the area.

Look around for unattended packages, people who seem to have unusually bulky clothing on and look nervous, that sort of thing. The kind of thing thats routine in Israel.

ISTR a good part of the area around TMI was evacuated, (though not the city of Harrisburg ) and there was a shift against nuclear power. and lots of head line news, of course and general anxiety.
