It's as if going for a constitutional amendment is not about preventing a state from 'sneaking' some pro-gay legislation through, but rather, holding up a big sign and proudly asserting "NO GAYS ALLOWED"

Why do you say that? The movement towards an anti-gay marriage amendment didn't start until after state courts had begun flirting with legalized civil unions and gay marriages, so it seems pretty clear that this is an attempt to stem judicial activism in this area, not just run-of-the-mill homophobia.

I suppose because I feel its being used as the justification for an amendment which these people would support anyway. I think they're also quite aware of the likelihood of failure. That's where the 'paranoia' and the 'homophobia' come in...it's about sending a message, not being model active democratic citizens.

Sure, but at least this way it's legally and morally permissable. After all, these are fine upstanding Christians we're talking about.

Responses about gay rights tend to be influenced somewhat by the wording of the questions.

I would like to know what the question in the poll were.

President Bush had been noncommittal about a constitutional amendment immediately after the Massachusetts ruling, with the administration worried that support for a ban on gay marriage would alienate moderate voters. But last week Mr. Bush for the first time voiced his support, saying, "I will support a constitutional amendment which would honor marriage between a man and a woman, codify that."

Well there's a strong commitment if I ever saw one! I'm sure glad he's our president! :vomit:

"I still believe that marriage should be between a man and woman," she said. "If I knew that we had a neighbor who was gay, I would not let my nieces and nephews go close by there. I don't want to accept their lifestyle. It can be acquired and it is not right."

So now gayness can be transmitted by merely passing by the dwelling of gay people! ****! ****ing ****! I actually work with some gay people! Must resist...turning...gay...

This is why America is a republic. We're too dumb to run a democracy. Fvcking morons.

Yeah, you know, and in the 1850s most Americans didn't support freeing the slaves either.
