What, they should have called it say Merrill Lynch tower, or Mercantile exchange tower, or whatever? Given the location and what happened, i see no problem with the name, especially given that its down the block from Liberty Plaza, close to Fraunces Tavern, and will make a visual counter to the SOL.

The Trade Towers were very masculine. This is a somewhat feminine building.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

And ISTR the architecture critics hated them as well - too massive, yet too pin-stripey minimalist, none of the character of traditional NY skyscrapers, and an awful windswept plaza in between. But they did grow on you over time.

                  This just works.

It's very Asian-tower looking... something I think our metropolis' need (they have some jaw-dropping designs). And I like the fact that it is exactly 1776 feet .

NY takes back the tallest building prize .

The World Trade Center was a wonderfull name, nice and global. Why not the International Trade center? The Nexus? That sounds nice.

"Freedom Tower"? NOT a New York name.

Think futuristic. Interstellar Trade Center. Intergalactic Trade Center.

New York is a city of Commerce and immigration, not the Mecca of cheesy Americana, which something named "freedom tower" would be emblematic of.

Why in God's name do these buildings have to have such a long and useless spire on top?!
