      No he didn't. "Melon" as a phrase for the football and "handmelon" for the game was coined quite a few decades ago - for some reason, I'm associating it with Papa Halas and the Chicago Bears.

          for some reason, I'm associating it with Papa Halas and the Chicago Bears.
          I've occasionally wondered about this word "handmelon". Google turned up only 6 links, one at a site connected with the University of Chicago:



          No positive connection with Halas though.

            I'm digging up a bunch of old Rugby references, and a large number of references to "football shaped melons" and stuff, but a conclusive cite in re: to American football being called melons? Not yet...

                      I'm getting laid by a woman who enjoys watching the game with me. What could be more thrilling than that?

                      as if the fact that she's your wife, mother of your child, and attractive wasn't enough?
