The case they cited was many states allowing kids to be tried as adults...

In certain cases (like murder) I don't see why kids should not be tried as adults. If they could comprehend whether their actions were right or wrong then let 'em be subject to a real trial. Juvinille Courts are a privlege given to children who may not know the wrongness of their actions.

It isn't responsibilities of an adult, it is the responsibilites of a person. We sometimes reduce those responsibilites when the person can't fully comprehend their actions (insane people go to asylums instead of prision for instance).

Btw, most kids BENEFIT from having 18 as the year of loss of dependancy. That means they have to be cared for by their parents, usually, until they reach that age.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
    - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

because its not all so clr cut when u become an "adult"
In quebec, you can drive at 16, vote at 18, marry at 16 etc etc
There are many such problems in USA.
Why are u an adult at 18 but can only drink at 21, or smoke at 19 in ontario.
Youre old enough to vote, and pay taxes and be tried as an adult but can't decide if smoking is ok for you?
My point just being that the 18 number, even in actuallity is not the only one that has bearing.
And to answer why 16 and not 12, the answer is the same as to any question like that.
Because at some point you have to make an actual choice and in my opinion (with a few far and beetween facts) that would be a good choice.

Because, really, wouldn't being forced to obey every whim of that redneck be so much better than being their equal?

The problem with despotism is that, even if I end up as despot, there is no guarantee that the majority of my successors won't be rednecks.

Democracy is nice. Americans should give it a try one day.

That's what I meant. Lower the age of majority to 16.
