Well, it's 4 AM and I can't seem to find the answer. Do any of you know whether birds and pterosaurs shared a common ancestor, and what evidence we have to that effect?

It seems that birds and pterosaurs did not come from the same common ancestor.

You'd think that the dinosaurs would eat all the birds.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

Embedded in the middle somewhere is the hypothesis that birds came from theropod dinosaurs.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

Birds and Pterosaurs are not immediately related. Avians branched off from the Saurischian division of Archosauria (think T-Rex, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, etc.) while Pterosaurs are a division of Archosauria in their own right.
"Dinosaurs" refers to the Saurischian and Ornithischian (think Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, etc.) branches of Archosauria.

Check out this site with lots of info about the new feathered dino discoveries:

These paintings are awesome.
St. Leo, Saurischia and Ornithischia didn't have seperate archosaurian ancestors, that has been defunct for over 20 years.
These are the unique features of the Dinosauria (including Aves):
- A hole in the hip bones connect the hip sockets
- 3 or more vertabrae fused to the hip bones
- Erect, not sprawling, gait
- Ankle joints simple, foreward-backward hinges

However, "dinosaur" is also a generic, all-inclusive term.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget
