You're right (sort of anyway), I've read some Iraqis commenting on the US policy and they said even Saddam didn't try to take their guns because of how important - a badge of honor - guns were to Iraqis, i.e., Saddam would have created more trouble for himself by trying to ban guns than the trouble caused by guns. However, this runs counter to the history of dictatorships and gun control and your "daft" claim that gun control is not a common tactic of dictators.

And not handing it over to authorities. That's the punishment (according to Fox News) Iraqis are facing if they don't invite troops in to confiscate their guns when asked if they have any.
Wow! This will certainly stop the iraqi guerilla from killing american soldiers.
Thinking about it: why are the americans suddenly afraid of the common iraqi people? I thought they welcomed them as liberators and cheered in joy at their arrival. Why would you fear the guns of your friends?

If an Iraqi approaches an American soldier with a gun, the American soldier should attempt to ascertain whether the Iraqi bought the gun and owns it legally as a citizen, rather than the gun being provided by state-funded sources raised by stealing in the form of taxes.
If the Iraqi cannot produce a receipt, the gun should be confiscated, sold and the proceeds given back to the public.
If the Iraqi can show a receipt then the gun is clearly private property and cannot be confiscated. Therefore they should shoot him instead.
There were over a thousand murders a month in Bagdad during June and July. I suspect that the Iraqis will be very happy to have the guns gone.

Iraq no longer has a modern army, when the US pulls back there will be another power struggle between Saddam's forces and Iraqis who don't want them coming back into power.
Sure they do. It's just in hiding. If we pulled out today, Saddam would be back in charge in weeks.

Ohhh, maybe because amongst a hundred friends with guns, there's an ******* who might try to kill you and he has a gun too, and you don't know which is which until he tries, and maybe your friends don't either.

Are we really debating if the occupation should be run according to libertarian principles because that would be too wierd.

I'm saying that there should be NO occupation, and that occupation soldiers and administrators are still subject to moral restrictions that anyone else is. Wartime doesn't change anything, to say nothing of this quasi-war we seem to be fighting.

There is a little thing called reality that may have bearing on the situation. Perhaps you've heard of it.

If you aren't able to deal with real situations (in this case the unlinked story relayed to us by Berz), what point is there in discussing things with you?
