    Michael Howard seems to be getting the nod and he is a right nob, so I guess it'll be all systems normal again...

    I think the Tories'll do well initially and then everyone will remember what a nasty uncaring git he is and the backbiting will start in earnest again.

        Howard has come strongly out of the gates, but we havent heard from ken clarke yet. There is still some hope.

        I think the organization that has appeared gives us some idea of who was behind the downfall of IDS.

          Howard is by far the best option - for me as a lifelong Labour man.

          It really is amazing how the Tory party has self destructed since 97 - and very pleasing too.
          It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt

            Clarke or Portillo would at least have a chance of getting labours majority reduced by alot. Howard is thought of as something of a vampire, I can't see heim doing well with non committed voters.
            Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

              Does anyone else smell a rat?

              Michael Howard staunchly and consistently declares his 100% unwavering support for IDS. Then, within minutes of the results being announced, most of the Tory big hitters who were expected to contend for the leadership have united behind Howard.

              The Tories have always had the reputation of being the plotters and schemers, and Howard more than most. Is this just business as usual?

                Well it is a fact that they will never change. Quite how anyone would want to give them a chance to get back into power again escapes me...

                      Clarkes euro enthusiasm could be a problem, but I can't see why Portillo is a problem, other than that he is a bit foreign and might not wnat to demonise homosexuals and single mothers.

                          It was only when Militant broke from Labout that they started to get their act together back in the 80's. I actually think Portillo or Clarke are the only leaders in that party worth considering.

                          The whole Howard thing is a bit odd, the guy is a good speaker, and quite witty in debate, but he just is not going to turn the tide.

                          What the tories really need is to break up, and re-form, and who knows, maybe one faction may be considered almost electalble.

                          Although I personally would like to see another 5 years of Tony, I do think its important to have an opposition, and we simply do not have one. The Lib Dems are not taking up the challenge (they often talk about becoming the 2nd party, yet ... when will they realise they have to do something to get there ???) and the tories .. well, we've seen what they are capable of.

                          I wonder how seriously the labour party will be considering a snap election ???? It would really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

                            Unlikely. The economy is showing promising signs of recovery, the war issues can't go on indefinitely, so the prospects of a Tory revival don't look great.

                              Problem with the Lib Dems is that from a public POV Charles Kennedy has about as much personality as IDS.

                              Whether this is true or not is neither here nor there - the plain fact is that the leader of a particular party has to appeal to the public to be elected in the 1st place...

                              This is something that both the Lib Dems and the Tory scum have to realise if they are ever going to get out from under Blair's shadow.

                                An interesting scenario would be if the election was called early, and the tories as we expect get hammered .. what will happen to Howard then ???

                                I wonder if he has just stood up to get them to the next election, but the deal is to stand down and let the real contest to happen then ?????
