New York is the city every American should visit at least once in their lifetime. Like the Mecca.
Hell even I love it
I would recommend:
- The Empire State Building on a clear day. The view is just spectacular. If it's overcast don't bother can't even see halfway through Central Park.
- If you're into military stuff check out the U.S.S. Intrepid which is docked on the west side. Has a lot of vintage aircraft and other goodies.
- If you like art, the Metropolitan museum is a must, also the Guggenheim which is a few blocks up.
- The Immigration Museum at Ellis Island. It's my favorite museum. Take the ferry which passes through the Statue of Liberty on it's way. There's really not much to do AT the statue of liberty so just take the ferry directly to Ellis and enjoy the museum (and take pics of the Statue on the way).
- Yankee Stadium. Oh wait, you hate them, scratch that then
And most importantly:
just walk around! Manhattan is the perfect city to just walk around. It is an outdoors museum since it's greatest feature: the monumental skyscrapers, are free to all. So, spend some time just walking around. On a weekend, go to Midtown around Grand Central and just walk all the way to Times Square and Rockefeller Center while admiring everything along the way, take a look at Macy's once you're at it (I'm still fascinated by the old wooden electric stairways).
On a weekday, go Downtown (where the WTC was). Some of the most beautiful buildings are there (the Municipalty building, the Woolworth bldg.), check out Wall Street on a busy day (you can almost smell the money), hang around chinatown and take a rest at the South St. Seaport.
Go, you won't regret it.
A true ally stabs you in the front.

Visit Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters..great views of the Hudson.
If you take the 7 line into Queens you can chose form a dozen different cuisines by just walking a few blocks, and the line has some spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.
