  • College: a Haven for Liberalism?

supposedly, college is a haven for liberalism and while that does seem very true in some ways, all groups i've seen on campus have been either conservative or just plain odd.

for example, on orientation, we were taken to a room with clubs and all that was over there really was the RoTC people, a protestant christian group, and a Black group. On campus over the days, i've seen an anti-gay rights group having a stand, anti-abortion people handing out pamphlets showing a brutalized fetus, christian missionaries handing out new testaments, and a crazy LaRouche stand.

so what's up? are conservatives and crazy LaRoucherites infiltrating campus?

You are mistaken. College campuses are rigidly Marxist with no dissent allowed.

Who are you going to believe: David Horowitz or your own lying eyes?

You'll find all stripes at college. Don't pay any attention to the anti-intellectual crowd.

Even they had to go to college to get a degree in intellectual bashing.

I guess that just shows that these folks are more active. Usually the majority is silent. If there's anti-gay rights thing coming up, there should be pro gay rights thing to counter it on the same day, or at least some day. People are usually just lazy, and these more little groups are usually very active.

So long as you attend a relatively normal school, which I'd assume Temple is for the most part, you should find all sorts of groups. Most schools have a few Socialist organizations that will probably Flyer up the area around campus complaining about corporations/Bush/globalization. There should also be a chapter of the College Democrats, as well as probably some environmentalist clubs and maybe an animal rights club as well. I'm not sure why they weren't at the place for orientation, perhaps they were in another room and you missed them?

Colleges do for some reason attract nutjobs who seek to convert people, so ya there usually will be some nutjob fundamentalist/mormon missionaries, as well as the LaRouchies who leave their paper around campus.

The vast majority of students ignore them, however. Most students don't care too much about politics, as academics/their social life usually presents enough concerns to them.

You'll probably get your liberal indoctrination from your professors. Most conservatives are too money-oriented to stoop to taking teaching positions in colleges.

Yep, there are all sorts of loonies in our university, including the looniest of all - the young conservatives.

Haven for Liberals? Rutgers sure was . Damn, it was scary to 'out' yourself as a Republican at that place (I even wrote an article in the college newspaper that 'outing yourself' at RU was declaring yourself to be a Republican... good stuff).

The craziest were the Green party bandwagoners during Nader's run, and the Black Student Union. Unfortunetly the 'moderate' Socialists were drowned out by the nutjobs on their side of the aisle, discouraging the moderates from doing anything .

The most amusing thing to result from that though was that I was GOOD friends with the College Democrats. Hell, they were closer in ideology (and were actually SANE) than any other political group on campus .

Damn straight, but the young conservatives of Texas are even loonier than I am! F'r instance their last little "prank" was to put up flyers of some poor Pakistani kid who may or may not have lied on his UT application and basically accused him of being a terrorist.

                          What a lame troll.

There is nothing wrong with teaching, that you have to "stoop" to a lower level.
