  • For those wondering just HOW misleading GePap's previously claim that a resolution has passed was, there is this information.
All four of the council's European Union states -- France, Britain, Spain and Germany -- have signaled Syria that its draft resolution had to be more balanced to win their support.

But while Britain was insisting, along with Washington, that the resolution must condemn Saturday's deadly suicide bombing in Haifa, Israel, to win its vote, France was making no such demand, diplomats said.

Spain and Germany also were making less explicit demands than Britain in pursuit of a balanced text, they said.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Fayssal Mekdad said on Wednesday that his government, lacking the nine votes needed for council approval, was still weighing its options.

In other words, the current Syrian resolution is so unbalanced and unfair that Syria can't pass it through the UN! In fact the fact Syria doesn't have nine votes yet, means that besides Syria, at least 7 of the fourteen members of UN security council don't support the current resolution. Syria currently doesn't even have a majority in the UN on this matter.

Yep, it's the new South Africa here. Riiight.

The Americans are wasting their time with Israel: it's a worthless money pit of diminishing strategic importance. I for one, can't see what interest Israel serves after the end of the Cold War. The US pays in lives for supporting it and gets precious little back.
You've GOT to be kidding me. It's very simple, actually. For the cost of mere 3 Bil USD per year, all of it in American military production, The US gets the full compliance of the region's strongest military power. I'd say that this is a ****ing bargain, and I actually wish it would end, the sooner, the better.

      • Azazel, what would happen if Israel were free from American control?

            • So, if free from our control, you would take Arafat out, for example. How does that harm US interests?

                • Huh? Looking back, it would have been better to simply stay out of that one. Eisenhower thought he was in charge of the West. He was very angry when England and France did their thing without consulting him. I remember his TV address and his anger. So, asking Israel to remove itself from the Sinai was more about Eisenhower than about US interests.
