I hope China, et al., succeed in creating a government-backed OS that will serve to make parts of the planet less dependent on Windows software for its computers.

This is bull****, you once again are misrepresenting my case.

What I said was Fitts' law says nothing about the edges of the screen being faster to access. This is absolutely true -- Fitts' law is a mathematical one that simply states that the farther something is away the longer it takes to get to.

As for "infinitely faster to access", I think you are treating an empirical claim as a mathematical one.
Fitts' law is a mathematical law, genius.

      So it goes thus:

      (A) People who believe that the edges of the screen are prime real estate since they are easier to capture:

      Apple Computer
      Microsoft Corporation
      A host of internet pundits.
      Agathon.

      (B) People who don't:

      Asher.
No, it doesn't -- the edges of the screen are easier to capture because they go on an infinite plane, but it is more complex than that.

It is not easier to capture when you only have one toolbar, and it's always far away from the Window.

What you claimed was Fitts' law says putting the toolbar at the top (and thereby a single toolbar) is faster than how Windows does it. I'm trying to explain to you that Fitts' law says nothing of the sort, but you're apparently too dense to comprehend that the situation is more complicated than that.

I've always understood that Fitts' law says the edges of the screen will be easier to access due to the infinite plane. The problem is, if you only have one toolbar at the top, and the window you control is in the middle, you need to move the mouse far more to get to the toolbar to control it. If you want to use the toolbar of another window you have open, you need to move the mouse all the way to the Window you want to use the toolbar of, then once again move the mouse all the way to the top of the screen.

This is elementary stuff, I'm utterly amazed that after months this is still beyond your comprehension. It's gotten to the point where you've set up strawmen and relying on the fact that Apolyton's search feature sucks so I can't find the quotes to prove it wrong.

      Disgusting.

You know, when your opponent resorts to bare-faced lies about their former positions, it's time to close the thread.

          Indeed, Agathon, Indeed.
You just seem to be confused about who is the one with the bare-faced lies.

Either phrase doesn't make any sense, though. Is it meant to imply that people with beards are the only ones to be trusted?

Where did the concept of a "Windows" type UI first come from?

I am truly amazed. MS is the biggest thief in the software industry, while some of their fans accuse other companies of stealing.

                          Talk about gall.

I was deliberately poking fun at M$. I don't care whether or not it works since I don't and will never use Windows. I think it sucks that M$ is making you wait for something that other users have enjoyed for over three years now.

so why should we even bother listening to your critiques of windows if you won't ever use it? doesn't that put you at a stark disadvantage in speaking from a knowledgeable point of view about it?

No - after using one I can see why.

i love macs when it comes to video editing. i don't have one myself, but we have a bunch at the uni.
whenever i use one, though, guess what i do? i take out that crappy one-button mouse, plug into the usb port my microsoft intellimouse optical, and use that instead.

Microsoft's whole OS is stolen from Apple...

and apple's whole os was stolen from freebsd and xerox.

so do i. korea being as internet-connected as it is, it can't rely on just one company for its backbone's os.
