Why should the English version support such a weird character set?

Every non-MS application on OS X uses Apple's built-in support for Japanese. MS decided to go their own way, however, and ended up with an inferior system. Why can't the world's biggest software maker get their **** together?

I think you got it mixed up.

Apple has shrinking market share, MS has saturated the market and still manages to gain marketshare.

MS isn't the one that needs to get their **** together.

The people who use Japanese on an English OS and Office Suite are not very common. If they want to use Japanese, they go for the Japanese versions.

I'm not sure why Office for the Mac doesn't support Japanese if the OS does natively, and frankly, I don't care. And 99.999999% of the people who buy the office suite feel the same way.

I beg to differ with you on that. With as much business that goes on between Japan and America, I would bet a sizeable number of people need a word processing program that supports both languages.

Office does support Japanese. It just manages to support it in the most non-user friendly manner possible, somehow managing to make TextEdit's Japanese support look elegant. Quite amazing, really...

Most international business is conducted in English, is it not? Last I checked, it was.

Most of it is. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a need for Japanese language support in American operating systems. Even if only a small portion of international business requires Japanese use, it is still a huge need given the sheer amount of business being done.

Yeah, MS is really dropping the ball by not having Japanese language support. That's just silly, IMO. It ain't that difficult and the benefits are great.

No that wasn't sarcastic... if it was there would be a smily... you know how I operate by now .

Sorry. Posting at the same time as Laz is throwing me off.

To be fair, MS does support Japanese. The support is just very disappointing, especially considering the excellent international support built into OS X. I don't really expect Word to support Gujarti or Catalan like OS X does, but it could at least allow me to type in furigana without having to change all my application menus to Japanese.

How did you get hold of it, and how can I get it for free? (the linux legacy... i refuse to pay for software).

                      It looks pretty sweet though.

He obviously skinned it with StyleXP or WindowBlinds.

However, IMHO, it looks even uglier than Luna and far, far uglier than Windows Classic.

I'd say it looks slighty better than Windows Classic... but of course, Windows Classic is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, so it doesn't take much to beat it...

I used windows blinds for windows 98 but haven't used it since. It still exists? I assume I need a newer version?
