Master Zen, why would the average Mexican not want to become part of the United States, given that so many Mexicans want to move here. If you conducted a survey of Mexican Americans on this point, I would think that they would love for the two countries to be united.
Why would the U.S. want Mexico?
What could they possibly have down there, worth wanting?
Oh, I know. Oil. Someone say oil, and get it over with.
Look, the fact that Michael and LTEC are the best things going down there, about says it all.
Now, that's sad.

Slowwhand, if Mexico were a "good" neighbor, I would not even consider annexation. However, they have been a problem forever. There is only one way to fix this problem permanently. If we can do this on a voluntary basis, let's do it.

Or maybe it's the arrogant gringos with their Monroe Doctrine and white man's burden patronization that are the problem.

Oh so now "Mexican-Americans" must decide the future of a country they no longer live in?
Why don't you come down here and conduct the survey where it counts?

Mexico has 90 million people give or take. Believe it or not, a majority don't want to live in the US, or anywhere else. Even the migrantes are, by a very substantial majority, short to mid term or seasonal workers. They can go up there, work for a while, send money south, and then move back and build a house or do something else with the money.
Relatively few want to live in the US permanently, and even for those, it is mostly an economic choice.
As far as what Mexican Americans think, who cares? They're not Mexicans. Do you think that it's the place of "German Americans" or "Irish Americans" or what not to speak for the former home country of their ancestors?

Master Zen, I think you would be surprised. Look at Peuto Rico. They were taken by force, but now want to stay of their own accord.
Ned, again, go to Mexico and make the survey or see if one's already made. Until you do your arguments have big enough holes to let a million illegal aliens pass through.

After a century of occupation, they've been pretty much castrated of any opportunity for economic self-determination. Look at the relative standard of living - they have nothing close to the US, but they also have no independent opportunity to develop commercial ties, or do anything else independent of US oversight, regulation and law.
There's a difference between colonialisation and voluntary merger.

MtG, from the Mexican's point of view, I agree that the largest problem would be the fear that they would lose their culture. I point to Peuto Rico as an example of Spanish culture that seems comfortable being part of the United States.
As to the average Mexican, sure they would like to continue to live in Mexico. But they could move anywhere in the US they wanted. Many would move for economic reasons.
You would also find a lot of English-speaking, Protestant gringoes moving South. In 100 years, the whole of the US and Mexico would have a common culture which would be a mixture of the two. IMO, this would be good for both countries.

Well, pipope, they all want to be part of the US anyway.
