    "My reaction was disgust because of the ignorance of some SMU students," said Houston, who is black. "They were arguing that affirmative action was solely based on race. It's not based on race. It's based on bringing a diverse community to a certain organization."

    so, what other "diversities" amoung people does AA check? i don't remember filling out anything about sexuality. i remember a religious one though. what else?

          Minority price. SCOTUS decided that one in Gong Lum v. Rice in 1928, IIRC. (Suit about probably the only Chinese-American kid in Mississippi, and whether he'd be allowed to go to the white kid's school, or the colored school out in the county, since they didn't want to build a separate slant-eye school to maintain "separate but equal"

          So anyway, it's official, you're colored.

            This was not an issue about free speech," Tim Moore, director of the SMU student center, said in a story for Thursday's edition of The Dallas Morning News. "It was really an issue where we had a hostile environment being created."

            This is a typical PC rant which covers up the fact that is about free speech. Being offended is in the eye of the beholder, and they shouldn't shut it down because a few people are too thin-skinned to understand the point being driven home

              asian = plusgood
              hispanic = good
              mixes of above= ungood

                  I think that was changed later or at least was different in other southern states. I took and As-Am class in college to fill my multicultural requirement and in that class the teacher said most southern states didn't know how to classify Asians since society was divided up between Blacks and Whites. Since Asians obviously weren't black they were officially classified as white and used the same bathrooms, drinking fountains, and what not as whites.

                    I was about to rebut Lincoln's argument, but ended up agreeing with it. While this is a clever stunt and attention-getter, it runs roughshod over the fact that only some minorities benefit from these policies. The thing is, neither the white students nor the minority students know precisely the people who benefitted, so you can't really hold it against the whole group.

                    Among the subset of minorities who benefit from the policies, none of them asked personally to be treated with a foot on the scale. To attack them, even indirectly, is to ask them to bear the blame for the improper policies of the school administration. It isn't fair at all to do so.
                    I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                          I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

                              What SMU did in shutting down this political protest would be outrageously unconstitutional if the university were a organ of state of Texas. But, due to its name, I think SMU is private.

                              Even so, suppression of political dissent is wrong, Wrong, WRONG!

                                More on this. SMU said the protest created a "hostile" atmosphere. This is the common reason for shutting down protests. It was loudly condemned by the Supreme Court in a famous opinion by Douglas who said the government had an obligation to protect the protesters from a violent reaction rather than suppress the protest.

                                Defenders of SMU must be ashamed of themselves.
