What will society's moral standards be like in 100 years?
Well, they'll almost certainly different. Personally, I don't think moral standards are all that bad right now. Of course, I disagree with a lot of them, but I think we have the basics down. I'm thinking this thread should produce some mildly amusing answers, since the current generation always seems to think that the next one is morally degenerate.
"Beauty is not in the face...Beauty is a light in the heart." - Kahlil Gibran
"The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves" - Victor Hugo
"It is noble to be good; it is still nobler to teach others to be good -- and less trouble." - Mark Twain

Exactly! I dont disagree with them, but now we have slavery outlawed, racism issue is taken more seriously etc... Im wondering whether we made a general leap foward or backward on moral improvement of society.
My first reaction was: "Ask yourself what a person 100 years ago would think of our moral standards."
But then I rememebred that moral values often change in a cyclical rather than a linear way. The sexual morality in the 1600's was about as bad as the worst excesses today, before the syphilis epidemic turned people into Calvinists and Puritans.
Something similar might happen due to AIDS and other STD's, if more moral people live longer and have a better chance of passing on their genes and memes.
I do think there has been a dramatic improvement in many types of moral values. Back in the 50's, it was taken for granted that kids at school would abuse anyone who was different, or anyone they felt like picking on. I and most people I have talked to agree that kids nowadays are much less cruel than kids in the past. It is no longer acceptable to openly abuse people just because you can.
So I see, at least in the near term, a future that is less cruel but more permissive, with people more likely to indulge in self-destructive acts but being less likely to injure other people out of spite.
If we can use historical progression as any indicator, I think that we will be closer to a truly free and democratic society. There's always a struggle between social authoritarian religious people and those of us who enjoy freedom. Things are much better than they were 50 years ago... civil rights, gender equality, homosexual tolerance... that I think things will continue to improve. I think that in a decade or so, we will really see a move back towards religious freedom in this country (i.e. seperation of church and state) as my generation slowly gets into power.
the standards will be a lot weaker a lot more relativistic and a lot more pacifist. some good things might come though. unfortunately its a question of whether the future of humanity has the conviction to demand and sacrifice for it.
things like true freedom of information and a transparent government.
I disagree that we will be more pacifist. Yes, this would be nice, but I don't see it happening.
It seems when americans aren't turning their violent tendencies towards foreign nations, they kill each other. Gang violence, domestic crime. You name it. And we are so much more "civilized" than were were in the wild west in the 19th century.

there will still be violence. and yes we are. its hard to imagine seeing a violent act that it could have ever been worse. but it has been. once we loose religion from its grip that only leaves nationalism. and even that is being threataned. its harder to goto war w/ a democracy(just look how big a deal removing a complete psychopathic tyrrant was). Bush used nationalism. but that tool may not be around forever.
