The school kids mainly do the simple work that has to be done all the time. There are of course always some "qualified" people working during the summer (and have their five weeks off at some other time) to make sure the country stays alive, but only very few people have those kind of jobs if you think about it.

To bad the vast majority of high school kids in Europe are unemployed.

In the US we've figured out ways to get those parasites ti be productive.

Oh, and Rah is right, in some of the regions in Germany where they have most free days and 35h work (or even less) per week they have also the most productive industry (eg car builders).

As someone said, it's because they are so productive.

GDP per hour worked as % of US level, 2002 and (1992) figures:

                    Japan: 72% (70%)
                    Germany: 94% (89%)
                    France: 103% (104%)
                    Britian: 79% (77%)
                    Italy: 105% (105%)
                    Canada: 82% (83%)
                    Spain: 75% (80%)
                    Australia: 77% (75%)
                    Holland: 119% (116%)
                    Belgium: 110% (108%)

The dutch and norwegians work only 1,340 hours a year

If you place restrictions on people's ability to work, the least productive will be eliminated from the workforce. Think about it.

No, you'll need more worker to acomplish the same thing since you can't work them 40-50 hours a week.

Koreans who top the workaholics table with 2,447 hours.
This doesn't surprise me at all. My boss is here 12 hours a day, most koreans don't get saturdays off and the woman who runs the mini-mart by my house is there virtually 24/7
really sad to see people getting their lives sucked away like that...

Wow, I think 37.5 hours is too much...
Then again it wasn't that long ago when we had the same conditions as Korea, say 30 years.

And wasn't there a study fairly recent that said English had the longest working hors in Europe but were the least productive workers?

It's no good working longer then 8 hours anyway. I know I do the same amount of work in 6 hours then I can do in 12 if I know I only have to work 6
