We could, however, make "better" apendages.

Do the artificial nerves replace sensations or just motor control?

The question is, how will this be used?

To replace amputee etc. arms? Great.

If they can make blind people see, and replace limbs... I'm sure they'd be able to replace feelings as well...

If you could replace sensations, you could program the nerves to fire whenever you wanted. Finally men will get to have more than a three-second orgasm, and by just flipping a switch!

"Could this be used to provide extra arms and legs to those who still have their full complement? That would be cool."

Can't - our brain is simply designed for using two arms, two legs, etc. In order to do that, we'd have to delve further into neuroscience than we already have.

Never underestimate the capitacity of the human brain to learn new things. If an infant had additional limbs grafted on, I'm reasonably sure that it would be able to learn how to use the limbs, although since they wouldn't grow it might be a little awkward.

Cranial Nerves, che, are arranged in pairs (one for each side of the body). Are you saying that a new nerve might "grow" in order to accomidate a foreign entity?

Just add two arms instead of one already. And voila, you're symmetric again !

The extra limbs thing is interesting...providing they are 'wired' into the CNS you should be able to learn to use them...
