That's something that has evolved over the past 60 years of American politics. Both parties, both conservatives and liberals are responsible for this.

FDR began the New Deal and LBJ began the Great Society, these Republican hacks merely continued wht liberals started. And yes, I think LBJ was a liberal. Doh!
Actually, the New Deal politics were a product of the times... Teddy Roosevelt really was the first president to start advocating such policies. FDR gets far more credit for the progressive advances than he should. It wasn't as if we dragged the country kicking and scratching.
But then again FDR and LBJ are dirty liberal scum responsible for everything that sucks in America.
Had liberals stood with real conservatives and libertarians, the neo-cons wouldn't have the power they now wield. But noooo, liberals thought they could create big brother to meet their ends and not ever lose control. Well, read the headlines and weep because y'all laid the foundation for the neo-cons.
