Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth
Jon Miller: MikeH is a shockingly revolting dolt and a masturbatory urine-reeking sideshow freak whose word is as valuable as an aging cow paddy. We've got both kinds
One was absolutely amazing, probably the best song they played.

Smile For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next
But he would think of something "Hm. I suppose I should get my waffle a santa hat." - Kuciwalker
Music = good, singing = bad. Since I can't seem to get into growling vocals, I just can't listen to Opeth. I know, it's my loss.
See that's the thing, though. How much have you heard? Much of their more recent stuff has at least as much singing as growling and the vocals are phenomenal. Try listening to Face of Melinda, Benighted, Harvest, or Windowpane. All those songs have no growling and are great. Next listen to The Drapery Falls and Bleak (both about 50/50). Soon you'll just like all of it .
"Luck's last match struck in the pouring down wind." - Chris Cornell, "Mindriot"

I have some symphony X, but it's bad quality or live so I don't listen to it enough.
I do recommend checking them out properly, they're my favourite band nowadays. If you like Metallica, songs like Evolution (The Grand Design), Pharaoh and the Eyes Of Medusa might be your thing.

I have a burnt copy of Still Life that I got from an army pal of mine who tried to get me into Opeth (see, you're not the first one). I just listened again to Face Of Melinda and Benighted and I have no problems with the clean singing there. The songs themselves are good, but not great enough to keep me listening to the growling on the other songs.

It's all relative to what you are used to.
Listen through Carcass - "Reek Of Putrefaction" and "Symphonies Of Sickness" a couple of times and then switch back to Opeth. Now Opeth's growling will sound just like clean singing and you might appreciate it more

Yes, I know it could be a lot worse, but that doesn't make much difference for me. Any growling (or otherwise bad enough singing) ruins the song as far as I'm concerned.
The main problem with Carcass is not that they are heavy, just that they are a bit crap.
Try Goatsblood. Much better.

I dunno, I wasn't there. Just got the setlist from the Metallica site.
