I know to use info and man, I just don't see why I have too. Why isn't there a good searchable in-program list of solutions?

And can anybody point me to a good list/manual of simple command line options, like copy, paste, c&p folder, new folder, etc.? And the usual newbie question: WHERE DO I CONFIGURE PPP?

Konqueror is good for n00b file browsing. Just type the path into the location bar. But, do not use Konqueror's Archiver for untarring files. If the tarball is too big(I am unsure of the exact limit, more than 10MB I think) it will be turned to garbage. I lost a backup tarball that way. Use "tar -xzf tarball_name.extension". Replace the z with a j if it is a bz2 tarball. Also, Konqueror's Archiver cannot be used to create tarballs, it doesn't work. Use "tar -cjf tarball_name.bz2 file_or_dir_to_be_tarred other_file_or_dir".

ari has a directory called "the_clit"?

Ah, requesting access to "the_clit" and having permission denied. I know the feeling well.

                  Ari:
Thanks for the advice. I couldn't answer before because this was a busy week, but I worked again on my Linux.

After a few hours, I finally managed to mount my NTFS drive, and I was at last able to install my video drivers. I learned quite a few things in the process about Linux... Gosh, none of my non-geek friends will ever have their personal computer under Linux until a professional group devotes energy to make many things simple.

Some Installers require text mode to work (I only learned by chance you had to change your /etc/inittab and reboot to do that). An operation as trivial as installing a game is a nightmare because of the hundreds of libs that are needed and that aren't present in the installer... I still can't understand why ordinary softwares like XMMS or games need to "compile" in order to install. And I still don't know what package I should install to have the compilation work flawlessly...

Yet, now that I progressed in understanding Linux, I'll reinstall my RedHat 9 again with all packages, on a bigger partition (since I can't make a swap partition, I'll add this space in my Linux part). I still hope I can one day try the seemingly promising games like Parsec and Planeshift. And I'm damn glad I could finally install a SNES emulator.

However, I hate to install my games in the /usr/games directory or anything like that. Is it possible to install them in /home/spiff/games/ without problems, or do I have to install them in the unwanted directory ?

Thanks for your answers and your help

I'm a curious person. If so many people torture them with Linux, ther MUST be a reason why

More seriously, now that I solved both problems, Linux is a satisfying OS, as long as I don't try to install anything

Actually, I love the open-source spirit behind Linux, and that's why I'm attracted to this OS. Now, if more people in the community became involved in user-friendliness, I'd definitely prefer Linux over Windows, if only because there is not this pestering obligation to buy all your software, or to "turnaround" it

Gah, while writing this post, I have just noticed something else that must have not struck a geek's mind: repetitve keys aren't a default (I mean, when you press "backspace" for long, it still counts as only one press )

But Spiff, the reason why Linux isn't user-friendly is because the people who develop software do it for their fellow geeks.

Many geeks hate Windows simply because it is user friendly. If Linux became user friendly, the geeks would need another elitist OS to flock to.

There is somethiing good I get from Linuux that I won't get from windows...

When reinstalling RedHat for the 3rd time this week, I had once again NOT to enter some registration code or crap like that, unlike what I'd do if I reinstalled windows

But you had to reinstall it three times in one week.

You get what you pay for. Trite, but true.

Well, since I act as the "computer expert" for my classmates, I'm confronted quite often to windows headaches too.

The only difference between windows and Linux is that Win gives headaches when there is a problem. Linux gives headaches when everything is perfectly fine
