I am just beginning to study (most have been studying for a month) (well I studied for a bit last tuesday), so what should I study?

It really depends on who is good to work with at Maryland. As a PhD student you want to work with someone who will support your work but not spoon feed you, who is good at publishing papers and is respected in the field.

Who your supervisor knows will be the biggest influencing factor in getting a postdoc at the end of your PhD. Second biggest will be the number of papers you have written.

Which university is it? Maryland U? Johns Hopkins U?

In other words, which of these is it?

Edit: Oh sorry, I thought you meant ' What shall I study after the exam?' as in a subject for your PhD. But reading it again, I think you mean for the exam. Just ignore me.....

He probably tried describing QM as a science, instead of just statistical anlaysis.

From what very little I know of it, trying to describe QM at all is asking for trouble. It doesn't matter how you do it. It causes heads to explode. There's no doubt in my mind that JM made an incredible effort though.

Sorry to hear that. You didn't forget the time independant form of Schrodinger's equation did you?
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Actually serious work is takingplace right now, with the aim of proving Schrodinger wrong.

                      But yeah...QM makes heads explode.

well, two of the 5 questions had to do with group theory and string theory (I actually got a good portion of these right)

one question no one even attempted

one I got mostly right (purturbation theory)

one I could quite get started (others couldn't either, but apparently you could do the later parts without getting the first part right, why didn't I look at the later parts?)

I also had the baness of not sleeping much the last couple of nights

and of not starting to study until 7 am (I studied a bit two weeks ago, but than quit)

(from 7 am until the test I had to shower, get to the test, and have a bloddy nose for 20 minutes)

what was probably the worse was the not getting enough sleep, I was not thinking the learest and so will miss some points on questions that require thinking clearly (the group theory and string theory ones)

I don't think that WM is that bad

it is just hard to do anything when you are timed and can't look up any equations
