I have heard that some victims were dissapointed in this, as now he can't be held accountable for specific crimes in particular, and that he belongs in prison, not dead. Shame he only faced one conviction and not the 153 he deserves. This many has wrecked many lives and done incalculable damage to the Church.

      Hopefully he was raped first.

I think death was just what he needed. Remember he was a priest so if his beliefs are right then he is suffering in hell.

I may be wrong, but I thought all your sins were supposed to be whitewashed if you happened to believe in God ? And that not believing in God was a sure ticket to hell, no matter how virtuously you lived.

Well, mind you, we're talking about catholics, wo with luck he'll suffer from the purgatory first.

That's only true for Chick-level delusionals. Send $19.95 plus shipping and handling to "I wanna be on Jesus' Buddy List" and that's pretty much what it's all about. Forget that eye-of-the-needle, turn-the-other-cheek stuff, you got Protection from the Outfit.

Your sins are "whitewashed" through the sacrament of baptism, but baptism is one time only deal. Now, for more Protestants, accepting Jesus Christ as your saviour does indeed guarantee salvation and lack of penalty for sins, although I think some mainstream to liberal protestant denominations recognize the possibility of Mortal Sin.

Now as for the Catholicism, we believe God will forgive for anything, so if Geoghan either partook of the Sacrament of Confession or was perfectly contrite before he died, he can be spared from hell. If he never repented of his acts, well.....

However, Confession and Perfect Contrition only remove the eternal punishment, not the temporal punishment; and that continue after death in pergatory. Raping 153 boys seems like it would certainly incur alot of temporal punishment, so while it is not my place to judge it would seem such an action could lead to a very looooong stay of suffering in Purgatory.

am I the only one glad he's dead?

You people are sick! And you think I'm weird and crazy?

Why would you wish for this guy to suffer and be raped?

Him being dead is saving millions of dollars charging this guy for more crimes. It doesn't help the victims any rehashing painful memories. And the victims know their abuse cannot abuse anyone else.

This is a good thing all around.

Since he now can not be tried for his alleged molesting of the other 153 kids does this affect the other lawsuits against his employer? Could his death have actually been a "hit"?

Does the judicial system in Purgatory allow sentences to be served concurrently, or will he have to serve them consecutively?

Frankly I prefer that the system not be subverted. If we in any way condone this man's murder we are in at least some way voicing our approval for the violent resolution of personal conflicts in other situations. This man's punishment was and ought to have been the exclusive domain of the government.

Just for the record, protestantism doesn't believe in the 'whitewashing' of sins. It even goes further and insists that we all deserve hell, because we are all corrupt and evil.

So Dissident and Bods deserve hell just as much as this pedophile priest - yeah, that's right, I am comparing you guys to a pedophile.

This is why when Jesus came across an adulteress about to be stoned he said 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.'. We are all equally bad, so we are not in the position to condemn anyone.

Furthermore, God the father is a just god, so we all must be punished for our sins. But since God loves us, he thought of a way out and so Jesus was crucified for our sins on the cross. He was the ultimate sacrifice and paid the ultimate price - for us. And all we have to do to is to accept Jesus' sacrifice.

So if this priest was truely sorry for the crimes he commited and accepted Jesus as his saviour then he is not in hell. And why should he be? He would have proven himself more worthy than Bods and Diss for example - his sins have been atoned for by the crucifixion.

I think it is extremely unlikely that he did however, so he is probably now in eternal damnation. Say hi to him when you join him.

Incidentaly this has implications for the judicial system. I don't believe that people should be incarcerated out of revenge. We have no right to punish others, because we are equally guilty. The only justification for 'punishment' is for the protection of society. Obviously by locking someone up we prevent them from repeating (most of) their crimes, and hopefully it will be a deterent for other possible criminals. (I am not sure if I believe the deterance argument, so I would probably say if they will not offend again, let them go.)

RJ: so, in the end, our sins are whitewashed and we go to heaven if we accept Jesus sacrifice ? Sounds quite similar to what I said (the main difference being that you switched "believing in God" with "believing in Jesus as our saviour")
