Also, gas pumps have special safety systems that close off the pumps from the tanks underneath the gas station, so this stuff in the movies where you hit the pumps and everything goes to hell.. it just doesn't happen. But you will get a nice explosion from the truck, however..
You'd also be surprised at people's reactions when we tell them we've run out of gas... for some reason, they seem to think we have it pumped in straight from the refinery...

And btw, its the gas station owners, and their organization, that have made sure this legislation stays in place... they are very interested in not having people pump their own gas. The difference in the insurance makes the pumpers worthwhile.

Pretty much everyone pumps their own petrol (gas) here. Would be very odd to find a station that had an attendant to do it for you.

Some states do. I know in Oregon in the 1970's the socialists outlawed self-serve at gas stations as an ill fated make work program for the state's unemployed. Legally the station had to hire an attendent to pump your gas for you. Of course all this accomplished was to make the price of gas so high in Oregon that everyone bought their gas in another state when ever possible.Originally posted by HershOstropoler
