The states have no business regulating contracts?
Thats right, as long as the contract is consensual.

Why? I find it refreshing to see a pol refuse to do something he has no power to do in the first place.

Why is it his job to intrude on what is essentially a state matter?
Except for minor things like the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

because marriage is something between two people who love each other...it is not a church thing or something like that...it is just a union (reinforced by law) between two people...who cares if it is two guys or two girls?

I think anybody that has read and lives by Leviticus 18 cares...

But unless you are an orthodox Jew that follows Mosaic law you might not have a care...

That still doesn't change the fact that the 50 governors have more say in what people were asking Bush to do, unless of course you actually believe that the Federal government was well within its rights to pass the Defense of Marriage Act.

Shrub has a responsibility to enforce the Constitution. That includes the equal protection clause of the 14th. That doesn't happen with the Defense of Marriage Act. That doesn't happen with leaving everything up to the states.

The difference between us is that I believe that he is doing just that by keeping his nose out of it. If you want gay marriage, the states are the correct venue to seek redress.

Why? Why shouldn't the equal protection clause apply to marriage?

If Mississippi said that interracial marriages are illegal, do you think that the feds shouldn't do a thing?

What Bush says in the bold line means something like:
"I say that gay-people aren't bigger / smaller sinners than anybody else thus I want to make sure that nobody should judge gay people on their sins since we are all sinners"

I think nobody but orthodox christians / jews can be against that. I don't see how any pro-gay mariage can hate that line. But that's pherhaps because it's biblical language people don't understand.

ok i must now say that everbody that says:' bush ' or something like that in this thread (or any other) is a god damn ********* ***** *** ****** ***** ****!

I'm happy to see that you don't care about the most important values of democracy.
Everybody can have an opinion and the opinion of the majorigy rules.

I am against gay-mariage myself, not because it's against my believe (I am a christian) but because I think it's plain stupid to alter the tradition of mariage that has lasted for millenia just in a few years.

Why can't we have mariage for man and woman, as it has been all those years?

What's the problem for gays to have a different way of living together?
Why does it all have to be the same?
Equality doesn't equal "being exactly the same".

But I guess nobody wants to listen to that in this "I demand my rights" obsessed world.

Why should they listen when it is they who are being denied hospital visitations, inheritences, adoptions, spousal benefits, funerary planning rights, etc?

Yes, since much of the US prohibited interracial marriages for much of the country's history, I think we should bring back this prohibition. This isn't about hatred of minorities, it's just an expression of my love for history and tradition.
