what are judaism's attitudes towards alcohol, by the way? Seems like you can learn a lot about different religions by their attitudes toward the booze.

Question: I've seen reference to being "born Jewish".
Does that mean both parents, or just the father, or the mother, were Jewish at the time you were born.
It's a question that really intrigues me.
Some cry `Allah O Akbar` in the street. And some carry Allah in their heart.

Reason I asked is my mother was short, plump, had dark curly hair, a large nose, and cooked a mean chicken soup.
Maybe I'd better start looking for a plastic menorah?

great description of a jew maybe you are a sefaradi?
As to booze - Judaism has a saying: "Wine makes the human heart happy". Judaism frowns upon bums who drink all day, but it's perfectly acceptable to drink at holidays and social occassions or even if you feel like it (...and don't over do it, like a drunk bum).
We even have a holiday called purim where everyone wears masks and different clothes, and we're supposed to drink so much booze we can't differentiate sinners from absolute holy people.
one of my freinds spends his fri nights studying the torah and drinking vodka

genetically it doesn't matter. you're Jewish descendant as son of a Jewish father just as well as as son of a Jewish mother. I think there should be a distinction between Jewish religion (maternal heritage) and descension of Jewish people (just to avoid the term race )

Orthodox and Conservative Judaism hold with traditional interpretations of jewish law which say that its the mother. If youre dad was jewish, and your mother wasnt, and you want to be jewish you have to convert. (though both movements i think will do their best to make conversion easy - conservative judaism will even accept an infant conversion, something otherwise not part of jewish law)
Reform Judaism in the United States will accept either mother or father, so long as the child is raised and educated as a Jew. AFAIK, the Progressive (reform) movement in Israel sticks to the matrilineal formulation.
Thw whole issue is a matter of considerable contoversy here in the states.

Yes, and they'll all vote Likud and try and settle the West Bank.
If you think the Palistanians are pissed now, wait till the trailer parks start popping up in the West Bank.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh
