  • How does one convert to Judaism?

Not that I plan to, but of all religions I know of I've never heard of it being done.

Judaism doesn't seek converts, and usually actively discourages them. But it can be done, if you really want to do it. There are some groups that would encourage it (but few).

You study a lot about the religion, for some months, and then you pass some process. It differs from stream to stream. There are the orthodox, the conservative, and the reformists.

Of course, you can also come to Israel, and become an Israeli, but that's quite different, and you have to belong to one of the 3 confessions first, or profess a strong conection to the people of Israel.

It seems some Jews also only tolerate to see their kids marry with other Jews. If said kids decide to marry a Goyim, the parents may demand a conversion. It's rare, but it sometimes happens.

After discussing this on Apolyton several times, its QUITE clear that those who dont "get it" are NEVER going to "get it"....... lets switch away from this topic, it isnt about exclusion but some people dont understand that.

To the original poster......... Judaism dosent activley seek converts but they are welcome. If you are serious about it, find a conservative or orthadox rabi and talk to them (If you wish to convert to reformed Judaism for some reason, buying a four dollar plastic menorah and putting it in your window one night a year will qualify, or half a night, or whatever you feel like doing if your busy eating pork that night ).

This sooo reminds me of The Big Lebowski, with Walter Sobchek, a born Polish Catholic having converted to Judaism in the process of marryinga Jewish woman, still following all those kosher rules and shabbas stuff after divorce

BTW = Im not sure the Hebrew word youre translating as confessions - in the english language Israeli press I generally hear the word "trends" - here in the States we generally refer to "movements" - occasionally one hears "denominations" but this is frowned on as a misunderstanding. Confessions sounds very unJewish - i realize confession as a term for a generic religion is sometimes used in regard to Judaism (eg: should Israel be a confessional state?) but not for the movements/trends.

I considered it for a time (after all, Jesus was trying to teach people to be better Jews, not become Christians), but I started to drift away from being religious altogether. I have been lead to believe it is not an easy process. Rabbis want to know why you would want to willingly join one of the most persecuted groups in history.

Interestingly enough, there is quite a bit of conversion in the American South, where entire evangalist congregations have been known to up and convert.

Does that mean that we're about to be flooded with rednecks?

Yes, and they'll all vote Likud and try and settle the West Bank.

That explains quite a lot of what has been going on, lately.

Honestly, though, I ", have no problem with people joining "Judaism", and joining our glorious nation, as long they don't believe in god.
