Dune and the Science of Discworld

Hmmm, one of my votes is missing.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I have a few Discworld short stories but I can't get into them. Is Science of Discworld one that can be read without knowing anything about the Discworld universe?

I'm going to go back on vacation so will not be participating. Seems like this is a habit.

Yes, it can and it fits the theme quite well. However, JohnT might be ticked off for a different reason once he reads it.

Drake, have you not read it? I managed to pick it up at a Goodwill store and worked through the whole series. I am Duncan Idaho.

No, I've read the whole series.

You made the same mistake I did. We both should've stopped after Children of Dune. Herbert should have too.

There will be NO dissin' of God: Emperor in my thread, thank you very much. Just because y'all weren't... capable... of understanding what Herbert was trying to say doesn't mean it's a bad book.

I thought they were all pretty good but the series as a whole suffered from "every other one" syndrome. Odds were excellent; evens were good.

I understood what he was saying. It was pretty deep philosophically but, unfortunately for Herbert, all the cool ideas in the world don't help the fact that the characters are impossible to care about. Leto is the only interesting character in the book and he's not even really a human anymore.

I loved all the Dune books by Frank Herbert. Unfortunately, Brian Herbert can't write worth anything and is ruining the universe. I wish he'd give up on his pretensions and follow the Chris Tolkien strategy that he dislikes so.

Voted. I'll probably not be able to participate, but I'm reading Green Mars because you bunch discussed Red Mars earlier, so I cast my votes in case I get some time and can find the book (long time since I read Dune, which is leading, I read both The Many Coloured Land and the Worthing Saga - A Princess of Mars sounds interesting and looks like I could find it in France).
