The biggest damage is from fishing. Both overfishing, "bycatch", and dredgeing up the bottom with nets. In comparison to that, things like the SD outfall are no damage at all.

i thought ocean colonization was a stupid idea... why did the makers of Call to Power have that?

1.) OIL. Lots of it down there. Someday we will go and get it.

2.) Many sources of geothermal in the ocean. Power should not be a problem if the location is picked correctly.

3.) Polymer technology is advancing at unbelivable rates. It should be possible to develop suitable building material.

        4.) Financing...see point one.

Wasn't St. Swithin a designer for CTP? I wonder if she has an opinion on this issue.

I love the ocean. Don't get to spend near enough time on it, in it, or under it. I'd hate to try to build anything that would last and stay where it belonged and actually be useful in it, though.

The best thing to do is to "drain" the oceans and then create a one world city ala trantor (spll?): the water could all the rid of salt and living things and stored as great blocks of ice miles down in the crust in giant refrigirated rooms. It would all only cost billions of billions of dollars and thousands of years, but what the heck?

How much Sci Fi do you read? The notion of the One World City is old, Corys..whatever the hell the capital of the Empire in SW is called is an entire planet that is one city..you can;t very well have 74% of the surface of the globe filled with miles of water if you are going to do so, now can you?

oh it's a real old bunch of series books about two square white boy detectives that go around and solve mysteries

even though the basic plot was the exact same every time it was still entertaining

The initial costs would be astronomical, of course. But the clean, controlled environments and 'new frontier' should prove beneficial.

After its found out that people will live longer, healthier lives in such environments, people would flock to these underwater nations.
