The money left in banks can be spent up to 3.5 times without anything bad happening to the banks. The reality is the banks don't have their depositer's money they've already made loans worth 3.5 times that amount. Basically banks are pyrimad scheme which is why they went bust so often before governments began to insure them.

You know anything about liquidity and deflation? It is best to keep the money in the bank.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

The bank is one of the worst places to get ROI.
