The general standard has definitely gotten better since then. Equal Rites is my least favourite one by quite a distance. If you have the chance to borrow one of the later books off a friend or from the library or something I recommend giving them another try.

Well, I always heard (at least at other forums) that 'Small Gods' was the best Pratchett book.

And I thought the first two books were very good actually.

And yeah, the first two books of The Guide are pure comedy gold. Simply brilliant. It's a shame things went downhill so fast after that.

I actually liked the last three. They had very interesting story angles. They weren't nearly as funny, but very good reads anyway. Silly and nuts... just the way I like .

Depends. All the books become funnier the more you know about the subject they deal with. You'd possibly/probably find the Ankh-Morpork political ones more amusing than ones which are based on more obscure knowledge. Moving Pictures is apparently hilarious if you get all the references to early cinema and the birth of Hollywood. Otherwise it's fairly average.

I liked the first two books with the potshots at the Unseen University and just heros in general (Cohen the Barbarian... hehe). I understood what 'Small Gods' was dealing with, just found the same style of jokes. Maybe I'll try a political one.

Gee, Imran, what an original witticism. I'm staggered by it's groundbreaking and revolutionary nature. I'm positively flabbergasted at its uniqueness, and certainly the surprise with which it caught me, considering the setting it takes place in - a message board in which jokes about people being gay or not, and variations thereof are few and far between. Which is, certainly, an understatement.
