Reparations should be given as community property. They should be used to build black communities, and train black professionals on the condition that they will work and invest in black communities.
If you just give the money to individuals unconditionally it will just be a waste. The status of blacks will not improve.
define black community. And no one has yet to justify giving people reperations just because they got sold into slavery. Ive also already pointed out that Africans are the people who sold the Europeans the slaves, wether they were black or white made no difference to the Europeans, they were cheap! Which brings up an even better point! Why arent "African" Americans trying to sue Europeans nations that held most of the power during the era when most of the slaves were brought over?
off the subject Im going to start calling myself European American!
First of all, it is an obvious fact that descendants of slaves are better off being in the US than they would be in Africa. OK, fine, there are probably individual exceptions to this, but by and large, these people benefitted from slavery - they're here in the US rather than in Africa. This doesn't justify slavery, but it certainly doesn't make me think these people need reparations, either.
My smartass solution is this: for the black people demanding reparations, ask them if they would rather be in the US or in Africa. If they say the US, tell them to shut the **** up. If they say Africa, give them reparations in the form of a one way plane ticket on Air Rwanda.
My real solution, of course, is just say shut the **** up.
Secondly, if reparations should only be paid by descendants of slave holders, don't you run into a MASSIVE privacy issue? You'll have the government digging into the past of millions of Americans, whether they had slave owning ancestors or not, in an attempt to find who should pay and who shouldn't. And what if these people literally cannot afford to pay? Should we confiscate the homes of these people? Maybe put them on the street? Preposterous.
Do that on another thread, though it has been done to death... Kid gots issues on this; one day he's a communist, the next he's a capitalist... go figure?
Kid, societal change is mainly what I am talking about. I believe that this has to start with equal educational opportunity and a change in the philosophies that are taught in the educational system. In addition, the elimination of race based organizations would provide opportunity for like minded people to band together to promote a change in societal thinking. When it is done under the umbrella of a race based organization, then to many people automatically reject it due to its source. In addition, many of these race based organizations do not promote societal equality, but rather inequality as they try to place on race ahead of another.
Teacher pay is a factor, but not a determining one. Many teachers simply refuse to work in certain environments. I have known several who would rather quit than have to go to "the wrong side of town" to teach. Providing qualified people means more than people who are degreed or have past teacher's test. We must provide an environment where teacher and student both feel comfortable and are able to reach for their potentials both as educators and students.

Me! me! I have a bit of cherokee blood in me (~1/32), and I would like reparations for the evils perpetrated against my tribe.
Also, I had several family members who died in WWII, and thus, were unable to live out the full measure of their productive lives, so there was less inheritable wealth to pass down. I would also like reparations for that, cos, you know, I deserve it!

oh, you thought I meant another word when I said the " the 'N' word"! Never! The word I was refering to was the word right after that: NO!
Sorry.

That's just crazy. There is no danger of whites being second class citizens because of their color, because of these organizations.

And there is no solution to that that is being seriously considered.

Just offering opportunity is no solution at all. There are deep rooted societal problems. There is no reason at all to believe that just giving people an opportunity will solve the problem.
I don't agree with this, but even if you assume you are correct, how is giving them free money a solution? I suspect a lot of people will just spend it, and then end up right back where they started. But, if this were to happen, I'd buy stock in Cadillac, Popeye's chicken, and colt .45.

You show me a black slave or former slave from the pre-civil war south living in the United States, and I'll pay them reparations.
This great union gave them their freedom from bondage and they ask for reparations? How about the blood of hundreds of thousands of americans. Would you like to bathe in it perhaps?
That whole civil-war-to-free-the-slaves stuff is so bogus. Take todays society, if companies had access to blue-collar workers that worked for free, what do you think that would do to the US economy? Trust me, your average Union soldier/General/Politician were not people who cared about black people's right not to be slaves, if anything that was just a thin varnish of 'christic morality' sprinkled on top to make it look good to the 'bleeding hearts' of the time. You carry on believing what you do though, if it makes you feel big and magnimonious.

Yes I made a thread on this before.
But the issue isn't going away. There has been a lot of talk about this lately. People are stepping up their push for this.
Where has there been talk about this lately? I swear Dissident, you create so many of these half-butt threads just to hear yourself talk. The majority of blacks do not consider this an important issue. I don't think there is one African-American reply to this thread so far. It's ultra-liberal Caucasians with an over-developed since of guilt or inferiority complex that fan the flames of this topic. D. Floyd has the proper perspective on this issue. Just keep reading his replies until your afro-anxiety subsides....
