  • Harry Potter or LotR?

I'm gonna go with the Harry Potter books, but the Lord of the Rings movies. I think Rowling's plots are weak compared to Tolkien's. However, JKR is infinitely better at crafting characters, which I believe is more important.

The movies, however, are different. The LotR series translates well to film. Both the HP and LotR movies are constrained by time, so the characters aren't as important. The battles of LotR are by far more fun to watch.

The battles in LotR suck compared to, say, the ones in Gangs of New York. I don't know if I am going to see the third movie at all. The second one was too interminably boring.

          I'm with Jag.

However, I think that the plot in HP is fine, it is designed for a kid after all. While LotR has a more origional setting and well thought out world I think the story and characters suck... HP is much better a character development (as Jag said) and the plot is much better, IMO...

I voted for harry potter books and lotr books because for each series, the movies didn't live up to the books.

Although if you presented me with a harry potter book or a lord of the rings book, and forced me to read one, I'd probably take harry potter.

Yeah, LOTR is kinda boring if you're not a fantasy freak.

Naw.. I loved LotR, I even read a lot of the other books on the matter... Yet, Tolkein could of put more work into the characters, at least as he did the world, gods, and magic...

What is kind of boring, and I love fantasy, is Jordan's Wheel of Time series... Talk about poor character development (or at least sparatic development) and an even poorer creation of a world...

Tolkein and Rowling are both great writters. Yet, I see Rowling more as a player and Tolkein more as DM...

I thought Jordan's world creation was great - his critical error lies in the length and style of his prose, and his constant tendency for constantly constant repitition.

I hope Harry dies in the next book or movie.

I can't believe people are actually comparing Tolkien with Harry Potter.

Potter books... easily. They are simply more enjoyable. LOTR is good literature, but so it Moby ****, and I ain't reading that again . One time for LOTR was good enough for me... it might put me to sleep the second time .

Movie wise, LOTR is better because it feels epic... even though TTT movie sucked. Potter movies, while nice, aren't being done by the best directors or actors.... though Kenneth Branaugh was quite good .
