About cars, there were significant import tariffs, but at least you could import them. There were Italian cars here, some German cars, lots of Renault 4 and simmilar. Few luxury cars for the elite. Also motocycles.

Yugoslavia had its own auto industry which produced cars, trucks, buses, motocycles and everything else. It started with licenced FIAT models and ended in the now famous Yugo line of products

I am guessing it was very protected but the products were still better then most of their eastern counterparts.

Wartburg being one of the more solid cars from the East. Illustrative example though, as it was built in former BMW factory - it was much worse then contemporary BMW models.

Lots of Ladas were imported from SSSR and even a small number of Trabants. There were initially waiting lines for cars here, but much smaller then in Hungary where they had to wait for a Trabant, which was unthinkable here, and ridiculed. I'd sooner shoot myself then drive a Trabant thank you

Did he drive it all the way back to Georgia? Which way did he drive, through Turkey or SSSR? Or was it by ship?

Obviously, the people that live now in Germany prefer the federal germany to the east germany. But the feelings of the people in the countries that are now 3rd world countries beg to differ.

It is ok. Our anthem was the boring 'Hej slaveni' the Polish use also. SSSR had much better one, but that is the only thing you had better

A band from Belgrade has a song about it. The words go something along the lines: /we had a trabant, but the pigs ate it/we use the engine now to cut firewood/But now we have a wartburg/and all the pigs broke their teeth/ ...

Plastic cars are the future I agree, but Trabant was a little too much ahead of its time.
