    That's skills, not intelligence.

How smart are we if we can't find anything better to do with our time?

It is claimed that there are nine different types of intelligence. How to survive in a life threatening situation is a type of intelligence. Thre is also sports intelligence, mechanical aptitude, etc, etc.

The fact that we are able to articulate, reason, and debate politics, philosophy, and science doesn't necessarily mean that were are more intelligent than a guy who can take a car apart and put it back together or a guy who knows which mushrooms are poisonous and which types of bark are edible.

I am loathe to say I am more intelligent than most others just because I got a 99% on most of my achademic aptitude tests.

It can mean we are really intelligent by finishing our tasks quickly.

My view is intelligence is a rough measure of mental speed, perhaps in different areas as you pointed out.

Suppose Person A takes half as much time as Person B in learning how to take apart and re-assemble cars, wouldn't you say A is more intelligent than B, at least in this area?

Or in some cases we gave up on other tasks because they were too difficult.

I've never completely understood why people are always so loath to give an honest answer to the "are you smart(er)" question. I mean, if you ask somebody "are you a fast runner," it's not like they're going to give some loopy response like "Well, there are different kinds of 'fast runners,' because some people are better hurdlers, and others are better at running a marathon, and others are better at running the mile, so I just can't say for certain whether or not I'm a fast runner." (A lot of the problem seems to be that intelligence is so often associated with arrogance, i.e., many people translate "I am smart" to mean "I am better than you," while they don't assign this translation to "I am a fast runner.")

No, I believe poly has enough dumbasses to stay within range of the general population...

It's sad really. Smarter people have trouble getting friends. People who aren't as smart feel bad around them. If you want a friend who isn't as smart as you you have to dumb down a bit.

I don't really think any of the people in this thread would break above the ordinary. (Me too though. )
