  • Bolding people's names in threads

This is becoming more and more popular, probably from the StraightDope or something, but I find it really silly. I know what it's for, so people can see their name stand out and know when they're being talked to, but to me I always associate bold with being...well, bold. Emphasized.

So when I read stuff like:
"Oh, I don't know JohnT, I think I could marry that kitty," I read it as someone talking normally, then shouting "JohnT", then resuming speaking normally again. It seems a bit dysfunctional.

    Just thought I'd share.
    Anyone else the same way?

to me it sounds, like the name of the reciever is supposed to add value to the poster's arguement.

    Generally, it sucks.

    How is SDMB anyway?

Why don't people just write everything in bold and only switch when they mention someone? What do you say Asher. That would be rather kewl too. Why is this such a big deal?

Asher has a point, but now that someone has brought this convention to my attention I shall use it from now on.

Kind of like Elaine Benis, and her over-use of exclamation points.

Because it implies we are unable to read/understand unbolded text?
and, no I couldn't be arsed making 'unbolded' bold just to make a point!

Monitor-ink? You should release that poor guy from inside your monitor and buy a new one.

i know a lot of times i just rush through a thread until I notice "Speer", "Albert", or "AS"... most people here probably do the same and everybody knows it so why not make sure someone doesn't glaze over their name by bolding it.

I find it strange too. I am always in the impression that people yell the other's name, which makes controversial debates look more controversial.

I prefer to adress the other people by singling their name out in a line.
                      (example

I posted a thread about this like a year ago. It's annoying, but not because of the shouting... It's because of the emphasis. It's so accusatory, like a detective at the end of a crap crime novel pointing the finger at the suspects one by one. Is it not true, Mrs. Bloomsbury, that you lied about being in bed the whole time?

Asher: So instead of having your video card output to a monitor you have it output to a printer? How do you scroll with that setup?

Eh, I kind of like it. It clarifies to whom you are talking, and, for people perusing the threads, it makes it easier to look for people who actually replied to your post.

So, deal with it Asher. And you too, Buck.
